CHAPTER 14: THE REASONS YOU DON’T CATCH FEELINGS

ZENAYIA

I stepped out of the car and walked towards the grocery store. The pregnancy gives me different cravings; therefore, ice cream made it to the top on my shopping list among other strange food items today. A gentleman got out of his pick-up truck, asking me for directions. Without giving it a second thought, I pointed towards the intersection when this bastard gripped my purse.

“Let go of my damn purse!” I yelled, pulling the strap with all my strength.

Women know that when you’re pregnant you take on a whole new outlook at the world. Right about now, I had nothing to lose with how my life headed. As hard as it is for a sister to make a dollar, I wasn’t about to let him get my hard earned money!

The unthinkable happened when he kicked me in my tummy. My hands instantly released the hold on my Coach purse. He grabbed the loose dollar bills off the ground and took off, after jumping back into his truck. I felt a strange pain in the pit of my stomach as my body hit the pavement. Shoppers stared in awe of the attack. My attacker escaped without my purse, and when it hit the ground, some of my belongings erupted out.

“Damn!” I cursed while attempting to stand up, bending over in pain. Instead of going into the store, a few patrons helped me up, picking up my things. I hobbled over to my car, with one older white man expressing his feelings about today’s violent society. His wife or whoever she was, carried my purse behind us. Once I opened the door, I slumped inside of the driver’s seat.

“Are you alright Miss? You want us to call the police?” the man asked. I shook my head, knowing that it would do no good. I could only look forward to another hour of sitting in pain waiting for the police, just to notify them of my side of the story. My first reaction instead is to get to the hospital.

“No! I’m going to call my husband and go to the emergency room! I’m pregnant! I don’t have time to wait on the cops to come!” I yelled. “Thank you for assisting.”

Calling my husband’s phone, it rang a few times and then went to voicemail. My wheels must have been on fire, because I ripped that strip so fierce with determination that there was dust coming up.

“Baby, I’ve just been attacked!” I cried into the phone leaving the message for Jazz. Hanging up the phone, I punched in the only other phone number I knew to call at a time like this.

“Candace!” I screamed once she answered her desk phone. “I need you to take messages for me the rest of the day! Something terrible just happened,” I said. Filling her in on the details, I realized that I wouldn’t be able to pick up the kids from school if I got stuck at the emergency room for the next few hours.
